PANORAMA

Specialists in Otorhinolaryngology from Spain and abroad met in Barcelona on 19 September, in a symposium organised by Hartington Pharma in cooperation with the Zambon Group. The meeting was an opportunity to share the new horizons opening for the non-invasive management of the main sinus disorders, with the ultimate goal of achieving an international consensus on the best way of indicating and using cyclamen extract in the management of these diseases.

In recent years, there has been a growing pool of positive experience with the use of this preparation in the management of diseases such as acute rhinosinusitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, otitis media and even in postoperative care after endoscopic nasal surgery.

Rhinosinusitis is a common disease that affects a large number of people (14% in the USA) and its prevalence is increasing. In addition to its negative impact on the patient’s quality of life, it has a considerable sociosanitary and economic impact. It is estimated that the prevalence of rhinosinusitis in the EU countries is 1-2% (affecting about 10-20 million people every year); the prevalence of chronic rhinosinusitis is 10% (more than 50 million people). In Spain, it is calculated that there are more than 88 million cases/year of common cold or viral rhinosinusitis, of which 0.5-2% may suffer complications leading to acute non-viral rhinosinusitis; the incidence of acute non-viral rhinosinusitis ranges between 440,000 and 1,760,000 cases/year.

In most cases, drug treatment is indicated in acute, intermittent acute and chronic rhinosinusitis. Surgery is reserved for certain cases of chronic or persistent rhinosinusitis, or rhinosinusitis associated with nasal polyposis (and for most of their complications). The goal of the treatment is to create favourable conditions for a clinical cure, achieve eradication of the organisms (in bacterial infections), prevent relapses, prevent chronification and avoid complications.

In this context, the experience accumulated in recent years with a new, cyclamen extract-based product is particularly promising. Nasodren® acts on the mucosa of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, inducing an intense reflex secretion that rapidly produces an abundant mucus discharge. This enables elimination of retained seromucous secretions, reducing/eliminating tissue congestion and oedema (direct osmotic effect, accompanied by an opening of the cell pores).

In short, Nasodren® effectively opens the nasal spaces, facilitates physiological drainage and cleansing of the nasal cavities, clearing the retained mucus and removing inflammation mediators, viral particles and debris with it, helping to restore a normal condition of the mucosa. It can be particularly useful in acute rhinosinusitis, acute exacerbations of chronic rhinosinusitis (when there are no obstructive conditions) and in postoperative sinonasal care.

This treatment can give relief - and in fact already is giving relief - to millions of people all over the world who have rhinosinusitis. But more than this, cyclamen extract offers the added value of being a natural plant-based resource that can enable some patients to avoid having to undergo surgery and/or receive unnecessary drugs.

As was highlighted at this meeting, cyclamen extract will revolutionize the management of rhinosinusitis in coming years. Indeed, this revolution is already happening and, thanks to the product’s excellent acceptance by specialists, it is becoming a treatment of choice throughout the world.
