OVERVIEW

Rhinosinusitis is a common disease which, according to the estimates, could affect more than 4 million people in Spain (to varying degrees). Clinically, it appears as an inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses, characterised by the presence of two or more of the following symptoms: obstruction/congestion, nasal discharge, loss of the sense of smell and/or pain/pressure in the facial area. Due to the confusion between rhinosinusitis and the common cold, the condition does not receive appropriate treatment and the patients do not see their doctor.

With the aim of updating the basic concepts related with this disease, review the recently published recommendations of the EPOS consensus (joint proposal of the Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology and the European Society of Rhinology), and develop the basic concepts for improving postoperative care after endoscopic sinonasal surgery, a scientific symposium was held on 1 October last in Granada, as part of the 57th National Congress of the Spanish Otorhinolaryngology Society and Cervico-Facial Pathology (SEORL-PCF).

A new product based on plant extracts was also presented at this forum. This preparation acts through an immediate drainage effect in the nasal passages, providing rapid symptom relief of nasal congestion.

After intranasal administration, a number of physiological clearing mechanisms are activated in the mucosa of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, consisting of, for example, a reflex secretion which produces a rapid expulsion of the mucus. The main result of this action is an intense natural drainage of the nasal passages and paranasal sinuses. The accumulated mucus secretions are removed, tissue congestion is reduced and the nasal spaces are significantly widened. In short, administration of this natural product induces a positive mechanical drainage of the mucus and a significant symptom relief.
