OVERVIEW
Rhinosinusitis, whether in its acute or chronic form, affects 14% of the general population and it is estimated that more than 4 million people suffer from it (in varying degrees of severity). From the clinical viewpoint, it manifests as an inflammation of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses characterised by the presence of two or more of the following symptoms: obstruction/congestion,
rhinorrhoea, +/- hyposmia and/or facial pain/pressure. As a result of the confusion between rhinosinusitis and the common cold, it is often not treated properly and patients do not see the doctor about it.
Furthermore, the treatments chosen are not always optimal, hence the need for alternative treatments that overcome the limitations or complications of the main reference treatments.
NEW TRENDS
With the goal of reviewing the present and future of the therapeutic management of sinonasal diseases, a symposium sponsored by Laboratorios Zambón was organised in Madrid on 11 November. Held as part of the 58th National Congress of the Spanish Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervico- Facial Pathology, this session aroused considerable interest among the attendees and highlighted the benefits provided by treatment with cyclamen extract. The moderator was Dr. José María Fabra, from the Rhinology Section, ENT Department, at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona; the speakers were Drs. Joaquim Mullol, Joan Montserrat, Vasil Ivanovich Popovich and Humbert Massegur.
Apart from analysing basic aspects related with the inflammatory origin of sinonasal disease and presenting the preliminary results of the epidemiological study PROSINUS, the symposium also provided an opportunity to explore in greater depth both the mechanism of action and the clinical results obtained with the use of cyclamen extract (marketed in Spain under the name Fluirespira Forte®).
This product promotes physiological drainage and cleansing of the nasal cavities. After intranasal administration, the cyclamen europaeum L. tuber extract concentrates on the mucosal surface, acting on the mucosa and paranasal sinuses and inducing an intense reflex secretion that, within a very short time, produces the expulsion of abundant mucus (the increased mucus flow helps clear the paranasal sinuses).
Thus, with the discharge of retained seromucous secretions, tissue congestion and oedema disappear or diminish (direct osmotic effect, with the opening of cell pores). In short, with this treatment, effective opening of the nasal spaces is obtained.
The rapid expulsion of the secretions in the nasal and paranasal cavities and the submucous glands helpsdecongest the inflamed mucosa and reduce the oedema, clearing the osteomeatal complexes.
Fluirespira Forte® has been shown to be effective in a broad spectrum of clinical conditions, in particular, acute rhinosinusitis and postoperative care in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.
